Tom has worked in Rochester, MN for his entire IBM career, starting
in 1979 on the S/38. He has throughout his career worn many hats
and at times multiple hats at the same time. You will probably
recognize many of his contributions.
His initial assignment was on Common Data Management on S/38.
In Release 3 of S/38, he lead the rewrite of Common Data Management.
In 1986, Tom and his team developed a product called DDM/PC which
allowed PC access to record oriented data on S/38, S/36, CICS,
and AS/400.
From 1990 through 2004, Tom was the lead designer and architect
for the Integrated File System (IFS) that was introduced in 1994.
From 1996 through 2001, Tom was the lead designer for Client Access
which resulted in the creation of Client Access Express and ultimately
the iSeries Access family. At the same time, Tom drove the revitalization
of the System Interface from Green Screen to iSeries Navigator.
From 2001 through 2004, Tom was responsible for globalization
of the OS/400 and is responsible for the Unicode support in the
system.
From 2002 through 2004, Tom became the Lead Technologist for the
Technical Chief Engineering Managers that worked on the core of
i5/OS.
From 2004 to today, Tom is now the System Chief Engineering Manager
in charge of the overall direction and plans for i5/OS. Tom’s
current rank is a Senior Technical Staff Member.
